Preparing for X-Ray & Fluoroscopy

Preparing for X-Ray & Fluoroscopy

Usually, no preparation is needed for general x-ray, although you may be asked to change into a gown to eliminate any interference from metal objects such as buckles and zippers.

Preparation for fluoroscopy depends on the type of exam performed. You may be asked no to eat or drink anything for 8 – 12 hours prior to the exam, or to cleanse the large intestine with a prep kit provided by your physician or our staff.
Please contact our staff for specific instructions related to your fluoroscopy study.

During & After X-Ray and Fluorscopy

Depending on the type of fluoroscopic exam you will be to lie flat or remain standing. The technologist may ask you to switch positions during the exam. If a contrast agent has been ordered it may be given by mouth in a liquid form, injected by IV, or in some cases, an enema.

Once the fluoroscopy or x-ray is complete you may resume normal activity. Drinking fluids may be encouraged to help any contrast material move through your body. One of our radiologists will interpret the exam and report the findings to your physician.
